A blur of wings along a winter shoreline.  To the birdwatcher they are Knot,-long distance travellers from the Arctic tundra.  To all they are a signal of the extraordinary fecundity of the intertidal mud and an often stunning spectacle.  If in earshot, they will make the air crackle with wings.
